Si bien en la UE se ha ido avanzando hacia la igualdad LGBTIQ en los últimos años, la discriminación contra las personas LGBTIQ persiste y el 43% se siente discriminado. La crisis del COVID-19 solo ha exacerbado la situación. Esta Estrategia aborda las desigualdades y los desafíos que afectan a las personas LGBTIQ, estableciendo una serie de acciones específicas, incluidas medidas legales y de financiación, para los próximos 5 años. La Estrategia propone ampliar la lista de delitos de la UE para incluir los delitos motivados por prejuicios, como el discurso de odio homofóbico, y presentar la legislación sobre el reconocimiento mutuo de la paternidad en situaciones transfronterizas, entre otros. También garantiza que las necesidades LGBTIQ se reflejen en la formulación de políticas de la UE, de modo que las personas LGBTIQ, en toda su diversidad, estén seguras y tengan las mismas oportunidades para prosperar y participar plenamente en la sociedad.
